Last night saw the local unveiling of the all-new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo at my local dealership – Porsche Centre, Cambridge. As always, Porsche put on a great show with live music, canapes and an accommodating array of beverages. I have been to many of these events with many different manufacturers over the years and I must say that Porsche never fails to impress.
Drinks and entertainment aside, this event was all about one thing – the eagerly awaited shooting brake. When the original Panamera was launched back in 2009 it was, like the Cayenne, met with mixed reviews, a kind of love it or hate it response from the media and the public. I have always been in the “Love it” camp. There’s just something cool about super-saloons in general, then whack a Porshe crest on it and that cool-factor just doubles. The Sport Turismo will no doubt divide the crowd again, but it’s not just its looks that make it a strong contender in today’s market for high-end, more “practical” vehicles. For years the Audi RS6 Avant has been the daddy of super-estates. Mercedes and BMW have tried in the past but the M5 Touring didn’t hang about for long and the E63 and CLS63 wagons definitely have a spot, but nothing on the RS6’s fanbase. And I kind of

Mercedes and BMW have tried in the past but the M5 Touring didn’t hang about for long and the E63 and CLS63 wagons definitely have a spot, but nothing on the RS6’s fanbase. And I kind of don’t get it. I’ve been in several and I must admit they are nice places to be and the performance is fantastic, but like the R8, it just doesn’t feel “special” enough. For a long time, if you were in the market for a supercar-eating family car and didn’t want a big SUV, the RS6 would take all your money. But what if you wanted more? The RS6 is already a big chunk of change at £81,000, and the Sport Turismo starts in around the same region for a low-spec Panamera 4, but with the latter, you can go all the way up to a twin-turbo powered V8 twinned with an electric motor producing a mind-bending combined 680bhp and still get a combined return of nearly 100 miles per gallon… That is impressive by anyone’s standards. Using the same technology they have used in their World Endurance Championship winning 919 race car, they have made the ultimate super-wagon and I think this is only the start of things to come…
Last night’s event was just a preview as the cars only went on sale this week and deliveries aren’t expected until November, but hopefully, there will be more to say on the car then. For now, here are some shots of the car:
