2021 Infinity Blog Awards
A lot has happened over the last year with Well Driven, from starting a whole new leg of the business to changing the way we create content due to various COVID-19-related obstacles, but all-in-all, the changes have been positive. One big thing that happened in 2021 was being shortlisted for the 2021 Infinity Blog Awards for the Best Automotive Blog and after a few months of waiting, I’m delighted to say that Well Driven won the category award last month. Well Driven wasn’t created to win awards or get praise, it was created to tell stories about cars and engage with its readers in the car community, but these awards really do mean the world to us and they certainly help keep us going on those tougher days.
Bringing the XKR Home
Some long-term readers may remember back in 2017 I embarked on a solo drive from my home in Cambridgeshire to my parents’ house in the South of Spain to deliver their beautiful Jaguar XKR. Well, after 4 years and a lot of car shuffling, they finally decided it was time to say goodbye to the supercharged 4.0-litre convertible and they chose to put it through our Consignment service. This, along with the slight lift in travel restrictions meant it was time for another road trip!
In early September, my partner and I flew from Stansted to Alicante and then headed down to the family home in Vera, Almeria for a few days rest and respite before sorting through the paperwork and getting the big cat ready for the long drive back. Unlike the last trip where I took the long, 32-hour ferry across from Portsmouth to Santander, this time we were going to spend more time on the road and less time at sea. This is partly due to Jess not really being sure how well she would cope with the 32 hours crossing with literally nothing to do, and partly due to my previous experience of the crossing being far from pleasant. Instead, we booked a crossing from Dieppe to Newhaven three days ahead and we quickly realised we needed to start looking at places to aim for and stay on the journey. As much as we would have liked to have made this a “proper” road trip with long stops and tourist attractions, time really wasn’t on our side so instead, we embarked on a whistle-stop tour of Northern Spain and the West Coast of France.
The route ended up being Vera, Spain > Biarritz, France then Biarritz, France > Rouen, France followed by a short drive to the port and then Dieppe, France > Newhaven, England and then a final three-hour stint home.
The Spanish drive was stunning, with fantastic vistas but not much else, and then it rained pretty much all the drive across France, but we did have a fantastic dinner in Biarritz and a slightly questionable one in Rouen – if anyone ever offers you the Andouillette for supper, I strongly suggest you politely decline!
The XKR is now for sale here in the UK, with all the details available on our Consignments page HERE.
Goodwood Revival 2021
Over the years I have been to many, many car shows. From Concours events to Festival of Speed, but there has always been one event I’ve always wanted to visit. The Goodwood Revival has been on my bucket list of events for as long as I can remember and I have actually had the opportunity to go a few times in the past, however, various logistics issues have resulted in me never being able to make the journey down to Goodwood in my finest pre-war get-up. This year was finally the year I managed to go and I must say it is quite possibly the best event I have ever been to, and I don’t just mean as an automotive show.
I was fortunate enough to meet my parents there as they had flown over for the show as a part of my Step-Father’s birthday and as we drove into the car park we quickly realised this was going to be an incredible day of vintage racing, fantastic entertainment and wonderful outfits. The weather was definitely on our side for the Saturday as the sun shone brightly all day with hardly a cloud in the sky. Needless to say, we all got engrossed in the atmosphere and we are looking at going back as often as we can.
10,000 Miles in the Range Rover
I’ve had my lovely Adriatic Blue Range Rover Vogue since February and after only 8 months, we’re almost at the 10,000-mile mark. This is both good news and also slightly worrying. It’s good news because so far, in the time I have owned the car I have only had to replace one diesel injector and feed it (regularly) and it really has been a joy to own and drive, however, this milestone does come at what will no doubt be at a rather high price. This is due to the perfect storm of events all stacking up at once that will definitely end up hurting my wallet a lot more than I planned at this time of the year.
I had really hoped I would have a few more months to go before covering such distance, but business is business and I have to travel when I have to travel, but it just means that the Old Boy is now due a service, and with it being the early TD6 model and nearly pushing 150k on the odometer, it will also need a gearbox flush and service, and last but by no means least – it’s MOT time in a few weeks. Fingers crossed the MOT won’t be too bad, but I am aware that he needs new pads and probably discs along with a few other little bits here and there.
Well Driven Consignments 1 Year Anniversary
Despite the odds being very much against us, as of October 30th 2021, it will have been exactly 1 year since we sold our first car through our consignments service. What started off with a high-mileage Audi A4 that smelt like dogs for £2,000 has quickly turned into over 50 sales including classic Porsches, Ferraris and Bentleys all varying from 6 months old to 60 years old.
It has been one hell of a journey and we’ve had to battle with 2 national lockdowns, an uncertain summer, fuel cost rises and a whole plethora of other threats, but by working hard and carrying on, we’ve made it this far. We’re already getting the wheels in motion for some big changes to both the consignment service and the Well Driven brand as a whole in the coming weeks and months and we’re really excited to see where we’ll be this time next year. It goes without saying that I and all the people in the background that have worked on this business are hugely grateful for all the support we have received and also the fantastic clients we have worked with and we are really looking forward to the future.
